Mr Simple is a gentlemen’s outfitter for all occasions with a series of established stores throughout Australia and New Zealand. The brand approached Prospace Design Studios to design and build their latest flagship store in Brisbane at Indooroopilly shopping centre. The client was clear that they were not interested in blending in with the crowd with their store design, and wanted to make a strong statement, particularly with the shopfront design, in a mall that otherwise predominantly features full height glazed shopfronts. The brief was emphatically answered through the design of a 5 metre high full width slatted timber shopfront, that allows a partial vision in to the store when approached from various angles, providing a dramatic presence for the brand in the mall, whilst the open entrance and narrow full width window, frame the store interior and product inside. The timber slats from American Oak, return in to the store at a subtle angle to meet the main white ceiling, providing a dynamic entrance in to the store.

There is a visual connection between the front of the store and the rear feature wall that uses the same design language of vertical timber slats on the walls, the ceiling and as a screen allowing partial vision in to the fitting room corridor. The fitting rooms painted in a pastel blue colour provide some relief from the otherwise neutral palette of white ceiling and walls with a grey colour dip. The floor throughout the store is from plywood stained in two shades of grey drawing on the simple aesthetic and values the brand believe in.

Mr Simple’s strong merchandising style required statement pieces of furniture to be designed for the brand to be able to display full outfits and ranges, oversized tables on steel frame bases and a series of smaller tables allowed the brand to create strong visual merchandising stories, whilst other bespoke floor and wall fixtures were designed from steel and plywood to give the brand flexibility in their product display.

The delivery of this sharp looking store, coupled with the attention to detail of the visual merchandising and in store team of Mr Simple has created quite a buzz in Brisbane and a destination within Indooroopilly Shopping centre.
