Award-winning designer Joyce Wang has unveiled the design of 109 refurbished guestrooms at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong to coincide with the hotel’s 10th anniversary. “Located in the heart of the city, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong attracts the most discerning international travellers,” explains Joyce. “These guests expect a high level of privacy, residential-style comfort and uncompromising quality. We have taken these elements as the starting points for our design, from the custom-made furniture and lighting fixtures to the neutral palette, added details like brass accents and rich material textures. Our concept was to create rooms that feel considered and special. With high-end designers surrounding the hotel, fashion was also an integral inspiration to the design.”
A striking use of materials is becoming a signature of the studio. This is evident from the hand-painted silk wall panels to the hand-tufted rugs woven with a metallic yarn featuring designs by Manhattan-based artist Christina Wang. Elsewhere patterns and craft techniques are complemented with textures inspired by natural skins, from crocodile and lizard to shagreen and ostrich, alluding to coveted fashion accessories. Intricate details such as fluted metal profiles, inset into acrylic bedside tables and desks, add to the tactility and bespoke quality.
There is a playful sense of theatricality here too. The minibar has been designed as a personal pantry, suspending a crystal vitrine on brass rods instead of hiding it away in a cupboard. Like an elegant jewel box, the glass cabinet is filled with delicacies by chef Richard Ekkebus, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental hotel’s Culinary Director. The comfort of the guest experience has been paramount throughout. Beds have been custom-designed with a padded leather headboard, framed by a wooden trim, that cocoons guests. The bedside tables have a bespoke sconce made with glass rods, which casts a soothing ambient light. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong rooms are an artful blend of subtle luxury and warm character.
