Mark Laban’s ‘digital daiku’ collection interprets traditional Japanese aesthetic principals, by developing different furniture pieces crafted using contemporary digital manufacturing processes. Obsessive precision and accuracy, attention to detail, a profound knowledge of material, anonymity and quality are some of the key hallmarks of traditional Japanese craft. The designer explores and translates these methods into digitally aided techniques, combining rustic details with subtle elegant lines.
Mark Laban‘s ‘temple bench’ draws upon traditional temple architecture, introducing a simple silhouette and assertive stance. The designer’s rustic stool on the other hand, uses a chiseled texture, which on closer inspection has been achieved using a meticulous repeated pattern. The elegant balance between rough and smooth, expresses a new interpretation towards Japanese craft, whilst still holding the distinct principles contained with the process.
