Jégbüfé (Ice Buffet) is a still living notion among the inhabitants of Budapest since 1952, when it was opened on the Square of the Franciscans. It is quite well-known; moreover it radiates the atmosphere of the great 50th’s.
Nearly 60 years after the first Jégbüfé was opened, the owners decided to expand and they asked two young architecture students, Wanda Reich and Noémi Varga (both from NumberNowDesign) to create the interior design, while Ábris Gryllus was asked to design the image of the new confectionery. The main inspiration was given by the old Jégbüfé, so the designers used the modernized style elements of the 1950’s to create a special atmosphere, that can be reminiscent of the original one, in addition they tried to retain the elements that are peculiar to bistros and confectioner’s shops.
The metal, glass surfaces, mirrors harmonize with the white color and together they give the impression of minimalism and cool elegance. The snowflake motif, that goes well with the name ’Jégbüfé’, appears inside in several places, like on the latticed metal panel, that surrounds the cash desk or on the cups and it also appears outside on the frontage together with the inscription, that was inspired by old, but famous American buffet inscriptions and logos, that were typical in the 1950’s.
The interior with the impressive image hit the target and with the accustomed cake, pastry, waffle and coffee offer, that is the same as in the other Jégbüfé, this new place can be the worthy little brother of the original.
