Although well-represented in the Greater Brisbane area, Aesop has seen room for growth, adding a fifth standalone retail space at the newly redeveloped Westfield Chermside shopping centre in the northern suburb of Chermside. The Australian cosmetics brand already manages a counter on the premises of venue’s Myers department store, but has decided to raise its profile here. Occupying a prominent location near the entrance on ground level, the interior design, created by Aesop‘s in-house design team, both acknowledges Arunta Desert, the expansive and remotely situated habitat of the indigenous Wangkangurru people which straddles the states Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland, and the Turrbal and Yuggera people on whose land this new store can be found. As a nod to the desert’s majestically sloped sand dunes, the entire shop is dipped in an earthen red hue and features tiered shelving. As if to dispel an overtly bucolic inspired interior, the design also incorporates a stainless steel-clad column and two matching large-sized sinks which reference the grand scale and exuberance of 1970s hotel architecture and Queensland’s burgeoning nightlife scene. When shoppers advance in the store, the ceiling drops dramatically, creating an intimate red carapace. Velvet seating wraps around a second column at the very end, encouraging rest and relaxation. The new Aesop store carries the brand’s full range of skin, body and hair care products, in addition to fragrances and home products.
