As a pioneer in Korea’s telecommunications industry, KT is a leading IT services company that has evolved from wired to mobile communications, and now into a customer-focused digital platform. Through ongoing transformations in step with advancing technologies, KT has continually expanded how communication technologies operate within daily life and the range of experiences they enable. Built upon this accumulation of time and transformation, the new exhibition space at KT’s Gwanghwamun headquarters weaves the history of Korean telecommunications and its evolving journey into a single, cohesive narrative.
The space is structured around two opposing axes –“past” and “future”– contrasting a temporal flow shaped by shifts in communication technology. A single continuous path guides visitors from the physical environments of the industry’s early days, through the present –where technology is integrated into services and experiences– and ultimately toward the undefined potential of the future. Rather than presenting specific moments in time, the space is designed to let visitors experience the flow itself –through which technology has been accumulated and expanded.
The section dedicated to the past reveals the foundational environments and physical density of the early telecommunications era by using raw, unprocessed materials. Metal-based exhibition displays, placed on rough-textured panels and painted surfaces, present archival materials that spatially express the technical heritage and systemization of the Korean telecommunications industry. This materiality of the past gradually transitions into the present and future through intermediary elements made of metal fabric. After passing through this transitional zone –where the solidity of metal is preserved while its surface density and transparency shift– the space opens into a minimal, open hall defined by refined metallic materials, symbolizing the future. Unbound by fixed displays, this flexible void accommodates evolving technologies, shifting modes of use, and undefined possibilities –hosting a range of changing programs through modular furniture and adaptable exhibition systems. As visitors move through this sequence, they actively engage with the evolving space, experiencing how telecommunications have expanded beyond physical infrastructure into environmental and experiential dimensions.
Rather than listing past technologies and achievements, the space subtly reveals the accumulated choices and attitudes that have enabled connection between society and everyday life. Instead of focusing on “how much has advanced”, it prompts visitors to consider “how connection has been made” –experiencing the passage of time as a single scene embedded in space.
