Supplyframe’s DesignLab by Cory Grosser + Associates, Pasadena – California

The interior combines areas for brainstorming, prototyping, model making and fabrication with a gallery and assembly space for community events. The historic building housing DesignLab is typically Old Town Pasadena, with bow-arched ceilings, exposed wood beams, and warm brick walls.

Four freestanding steel screens – at first glance reclaimed but in reality bespoke made for the project – are tied back to the reclaimed brick wall behind. These continue the industrial aesthetic while housing a series of workspaces, and separate the arcade from the spaces beyond.

The intriguingly grotesque decorum is frivolously balanced out by a series of crystal pendant lamps that were sourced locally at vintage stores. Other contemporary touches include the transparent little snow globes over the bar – after all sever means north in Russian – by artist John Smith, and which playfully contain little sculptures and other odd miniscule objects.
