Fujimido Aoto Shop by MuFF Co., Tokyo

The corner section of a Tokyo rice cracker factory has been transformed into an on-site sales shop for its crispy creations. The client wanted shoppers to be able to see rice crackers being made, and a minimum of 20 varieties of the product to be displayed simultaneously. To accommodate these desires, designer Kosuke Kajikawa of MuFF Co., Ltd. created a shelving system with open gaps where drawers have been removed. These gaps create small windows to the bakery, allowing passers-by to watch factory workers.

Due to space limitations – the store is just 13-sq-m – Kajikawa created the shelving wall to function as a space divider, storage system and display case in one. The ceiling height is the same as the length of the room, which further maximizes a feeling of spaciousness. ‘Watching workflow in the factory from within the store gives customers a hint to imagine what is going behind the store, which maximizes the store’s advantage of being located in the corner of a factory,’ Kajikawa says.
