As one of the most forward cities on the U.S. west coast, Portland boasts a retail landscape to match. And it isn’t surprising Aesop has decided to set up shop here. The shop is situated on the ground floor of a Victorian-style building in the northwest district of town. The interior, created by San Francisco-based designer John Randolph, conjures the hybrid spirit of traditional apothecary and general store.
The repetitive use of hemp fibre is a nod to the city’s historic shipping and logging industries. The material was once used to manufacture tents that housed the many loggers and fishermen. Walls are covered in quilted maritime canvas and paired with canvas-clad shelving and flooring to offer a unique sensory respite. The new Aesop store carries the brand’s full range of skin, body and hair care products.
