Almost one year after Oslo-based jewellery brand Tom Wood opened up shop in Tokyo, it has raised its profile once again with a shop-in-shop at Dover Street Market Ginza, the local outpost of elusive fashion doyenne Rei Kawakubo‘s iconic Dover Street Market retail concept. It’s quite a feat as not every brand gains access to Kawakubo’s retail sphere, let alone set up shop there. Perched on the fifth floor, the shop-in-shop is designed by Tom Wood‘s in-house design team, featuring a setting which aims to unite the North, the brand’s very cradle, and the East. The chosen aesthetic abundantly references the brand’s understated style and commitment to responsibility where height, linearity and texture are central to the design. The the tightly curated material palette, which includes aluminium, steel, glass and Kvadrat Really, reflects both the brand’s eco-friendly principles and focus on innovation.

As such, the aforementioned range only features circular materials which can be repurposed. In the design, the age-old Norwegian construction method Laftwerk takes centre stage. Used in the Viking Age, it comprises stacked logs, a technique which also resonates in Japanese architectural tradition. Here, however, the technique is captured by sleek and shiny metal casing, creating a very distinctive appearance. Three glass windows are set into the structure where jewellery is displayed across five vertical shelves on customs inserts. Below the window is a moveable drawer which acts as a jewellery display. The mirror display is positioned on the opposite end side of the space, featuring floor-to-ceiling vertical mirrors, enhancing brightness and spaciousness. The new Tom Wood shop-in-shop carries a selection of the brand’s extensive range of rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
