A division of Basque clothing company Batela 1991, rainwear brand TANTÄ is all about slow-fashion, creating quality apparel with a focus on durability and minimal waste. Mind you, it even has an entire collection crafted from recycled polyester. Raising its profile, TANTÄ recently inaugurated a design-led showroom at the Batela 1991 headquarters in the town of Zestoa, a 30-minute car ride west of San Sebastián. First, the space has been entirely stripped, laying bare the building’s shell, which, in turn, serves as a backdrop for the new setting designed by Basque creative studio Pensando en blanco. Taking ample cues from the fluidity, movement, and impermanence of water and light, the showroom is an architectural translation which also seamlessly aligns with TANTÄ‘s brand philosophy of adapting to capricious weather conditions.
Upon entering the space, two curved walls of glass blocks instantly hint the setting’s predominant material, concealing an immediate overview of the showroom. Turning the corner, the full expanse of the glass wall unfolds, stretching along the full length of the space, although it’s interrupted in the middle by a sizeable LED screen intended for screening branded content. It’s overlaid by a suspended sleek steel rail follows its contours, providing ample room to display the TANTÄ collections. Directly opposite, lining the windows, another suspended metal rail offers more display space. The showroom’s furnishings are few and simple, comprising of two contrasting, custom-made display tables—a sculptural one crafted from alabaster plaster, and an equivalent, on wheels that is, in full metal. Polished concrete flooring ties in the entire setting, offering a meditative contrast to the exposed ceiling with its myriad of light fixtures and utility pipes.. © superfuture
