Doboz (‘Box’ in English) is a new party place and cultural center in the 7th district of Budapest. The building was a children’s hospital of the former ghetto during the Second World War. Its residents slowly moved from the building as it has been gone to ruin in the last 10 years and nobody had the money to refurbish it.
The creators didn’t want to open an other ruin-pub, as there are plenty of them in this part of Budapest. Although they reused almost everything that left in the building, from old tiles and bricks to doors, they invited contemporary Hungarian artists to give a twist to the whole interior. That’s how King Kong appeared to occupy the oldest sycamore of the district that stands right in the middle of Doboz’s yard. The King Kong statue is a creation of Gábor Miklós Szőke, while photos and customized wallpapers were made by Márk Viszlay, Áron Süveg and Márk Süveg. The surrealistic octopus-lamps were design by Éva Székely basket-work artist.
But why ‘Box’? The box element is both the most prominent and the most expensive part of this project. Basically a box is covering the whole building, serving as an eye-catcher and a soundproof that allows DJs to turn up the music until 96 decibel.
The party place, concert hall and grill bar occupy only the ground floor. The first and second floor gives space to offices, workshops and galleries in 40-100 square-meter rooms that were once apartments and infirmaries.
