The project Katacomb started with an inspiration from a street that never sleeps. Hong-Dae street, located in Seoul, Korea is always full of young crowds and our studio approached the concept of space as underground City; Catacomb. Our site was mostly located under basement and we tried to overcome this limited conditions with unique concept.
Catacombs, most notable as underground passageways and cemetries, “sleeping place” are human-made subterranean passageways for religious practice. Any chamber used as a burial place is a catacomb, although the word is most commonly associated with the Roman Empire.
Our space was re-created with powerful gothic architectural themes using arch and stained glass windows. Geometric patterned stained glass ceiling depicts splendid view from the entrance and such elements like arch and dome structure interior highlights the Underground City.
Gold-tinted skull pendants hang down from the ceiling and they add brightness to the space. Rough brick walls conveyed the shelter image of the Catacomb and they are well blended with mysterious concept of the space. Simple black and white furniture keep balance between modern and tradition.
Our project, Catacomb creates it’s dynamic space through interesting elements. Gothic styled interior was expressed powerfully, and its unique characteristics let visitors to explore the space.
