“Last fall, Jonathan Adams, one of Philadelphia’s best chefs, and Damien Pileggi, an artisanal coffee expert, launched Rival Bros Coffee, a small-batch, custom coffee roaster. Childhood friends, Adams and Pileggi have spent years working to perfect their coffee, which is available two ways: online from the Rival Bros e-store, with nationwide shipping; and locally at their mobile coffee shop, The Rival Bros Truck.
‘A great cup of coffee or espresso always starts with extraordinary beans that are roasted with care and precision,’ says Adams, who continues his role as executive chef of both, Pub & Kitchen, one of city’s most popular gastropubs and The Diving Horse, a seasonal restaurant in Avalon, NJ. ‘It probably sounds a little fanatical, but we sample each and every varietal that goes into our blends, then we adjust the ratios and the depth of the roasts to achieve our predetermined flavor profile,’ adds Pileggi.
The Rival Bros transformed an old delivery truck into a top-of-the-line “coffee shop on wheels,” retrofitting it to their exacting brewing and serving standards. It features the best coffee and espresso machines available, including built-in hand pour stations, a La Marzocco two-group espresso machine with pre-infusion paddles, a Fetco extractor brewer and Italian-made Mazzer espresso coffee grinders.
The Rival Bros man the truck themselves, hand-pulling espresso shots and even choosing the music selections that guests enjoy over their high-end sound system while they wait for their coffee drinks.”
Rival Bros Coffee co-owners Jonathan Adams and Damien Pileggi worked with Red Tettemer, a firm based out of Philadelphia.
