Inside Studio designed the offices of trade association Union des Artistes, located in Montreal, Canada. The Union des artistes (UDA) is a professional union representing French-speaking artists (actors, singers, etc.) working in Canada.
The President, an actress herself, wanted us to imagine the new space as a creative incubator, a gathering place. By placing the cafeteria next to the reception, it becomes this nucleus promoting interactions and meetings between the members/artists and the employees.
With the need of many closed offices for their unionized employees, two cylindrical conference rooms highlighting member’s projects, inspired by “Morris” columns (public signage), break the rhythm of the closed rooms while serving as pivots for interior circulation. Injections of wood also bring warmth and variation in the space, including oversized antique –inspired doors welcoming you into the conference rooms.
How do you reflect diversity, creativity and the artistic spirit of the members in a low-budget project? Wallpaper was the solution; colors, textures, patterns, trompe-l’oeil, all in one. Juxtaposed to vibrating carpets, they become pigments within a minimalist black and white canvas.
