Retail veteran Andreas Feldenkirchen emerges once again in Hamburg‘s retail scene almost a decade after he shuttered his two eponymous men’s and women’s stores. Very similar to the aforementioned stores, Feldenkirchen picked a pioneering location, away from established shopping zones, to establish new concept store Matter. Occupying a voluminous 230 sqm. (2,476 sq.ft.) corner unit on the ground floor of a 1920s residential building alongside the Isebek Canal, on the border between the leafy Harvestehude and Hoheluft neighbourhoods in northern Hamburg. The store name is a nod to the ‘matter’ in ‘what matters’, and firmly signals a forward and conscious approach to consumption. The retail space is like blank canvas, featuring a pristine white walls and natural rubber flooring, paired with an exposed ceiling which reveals the building’s brick shell. Furnishings are simple, and in some cases modular, allowing an abundance of configurations. The sole fixture is a service counter in Matter‘s very own café, am dcomes with two communal tables and chairs where shoppers can sit back and and socialise over coffee, pastries of quiche. As a store manager, buyer and marketing manager, Feldenkirchen wears many hats, but the full supervision of Matter‘s operations surely enables a tighter curation of coveted goods. As said, the merchandise adheres to contemporary lifestyle principles, emphasising quality and longevity rather than trends, but also reflects a great deal of fun. The current collection includes clothing for men’s and women’s apparel, footwear, accessories, bags, stationery, home objects, magazines and books, and more. The current brand list includes coveted names, such as Closed, Nigel Cabourn x Closed, Equality, 101 Copenhagen, Maska, Monocle and Castart.
