There’s no denying, Canada‘s forward Cannabis Act is a gift that keeps on giving, and we mean that strictly from a design point of view. The new law may have rejoiced a specific demographic of relaxation seekers, it also has spawned many a striking design-led emporium specialised in cannabis and related products, and the latest one to open its doors is Alchemy Canna Co.‘s flagship store in Toronto. The store, designed by local architecture practice Studio Paolo Ferrari, is the alluring successor of PopCann, a sea container which occupied the premises while the former was actually built. Distinctly contemporary, the retail space obviously offers an immersive shopping experience, but also has a decidedly evocative edge which is not only rooted in artistry, nature, and technology, but also signals Alchemy Canna Co.‘s distinctive brand identity. Upon entering the store, shoppers see eye to eye with a lush plant installation before proceeding to a serene room brimming with a wide range of coveted goods.

A grid-textured ceiling hovers over an understated setting captured by marble tile flooring, a large sculptural sales counter with built-in digital screens and a curved backdrop of cabinets and shelves made of Corcoran. A seemingly levitating shelving unit and display table in a bright yellow hue flank the aforementioned setting. There are also a few key elements of tech ingenuity to be found, such as custom cannabis sniff jars and a self-checkout table with custom wheels that allow it to glide through the space along an in-floor aluminium track. The adjacent accessories room is an intimate affair, featuring undulating walls in orange eco-resin, matching fluffy carpeting, and a mirrored stainless ceiling. Last but not least, there’s Alchemy Canna Co.‘s check-out area, yet again in an entirely different décor. Here, shoppers find themselves surrounded by walls and fixtures covered in terracotta bricks. Sizeable hanging screens display artistic footage while orders being assembled by the back-of-house staff through a small aluminium slot.
