Jarrad Smith and Ollie Cousins have come a long, long way. Since founding MAAP in 2014, the Melbourne-based tech performance wear brand has gone full throttle, establishing a string of retail spaces, or rather, ‘LaBs’ in true MAAP parlance, across the planet. The company’s expansion is ongoing, shifting its focus from a string of major cities in Europe and the Far East to the U.S. West Coast to inaugurate its latest outpost in Los Angeles. The retail space occupies a ground floor unit on the premises of a low-rise structure built in 1912, situated smack on the intersection of bustling arteries Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Main Street and Brooks Avenue in the very heart of Venice Beach, a highly popular ‘off-time’ destination for many young Angelenos. MAAP LaB Los Angeles measures 139 sqm. (1,496 sq.ft.), and features an interior design by Melbourne-based practice and longtime collaborator Clare Cousins Architects.

The building’s shell, comprising sections of exposed red bricks and ceiling of timber beams and planking, intentionally serves as a backdrop, offering an eclectic contrast with the modern interventions, which include pristine white stuccoed wall sections, concrete flooring, sleek metal display units lining the wall, which also embed a large LED screen featuring branded content. Polished metal panels hug around an elongated, deep red sales counter with a metal grid front, while tying in with the all-metal display table and drawer cabinet in the window. A comfy, large-sized modular sofa, paired with a circular table, adds a homey touch to the setting. The newly opened MAAP LaB Los Angeles stocks men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, and all collab items. Similar to all other outposts, this MAAP LaB also holds curated weekly MAAP rides across town and also maintains a roster of exclusive drops, parties and special guests. © superfuture
