In addition to One Up, the new restaurant and bar located within the Grand Hyatt on Union Square in San Francisco, CCS designed the lobby and lounge, which was part of a larger $70 million renovation of the entire property. The concept, which drove the design, is about identifying the local region of Northern California, but also about recognizing the Grand Hyatt brand and “International Travel”, working together in varying scales so that both are prevalent.
The hotel lobby and mezzanine are essentially within a cube of space anchored by two central elevator cores. This core has been covered in eucalyptus boards, from the ground to the thirty-foot ceiling, acting as a common architectural element to all areas. The large presence of local wood warms the space and sets up a regional impression of Northern California as “timber country”. A new steel, glass, and wood stair leads from the lobby to the mezzanine and features a 24-foot wide digital, animated California Sunset that was custom created to further link to the region.
