Amongst all the lists, there is a list of 10 best lamps in the world. I am one of the many who shares hope and pride to the fact that it was possible for one man to design at least 5 out of 10 on the list. One of the lamps on the list must be Achille Castiglioni’s cocoon lamp he designed in the early 60s.
I call Achille my uncle because he was always there when I was making my steps as a designer and I feel we are family. He was there when I was kicked out of design school after a year and when I made my first wooden rocking lamp which burned my room down. He was there when I decided to make a model of my new design, even when I was sure it would end up between the other 25 un-produced prototypes, and when all lamps were tiny black halogenes, I dreamt up gigantic red lampshades. I have always been so much inspired by the man who gave identity to what we call the untouchable lightness. And still, sometimes, he taps me on the shoulder, and when I turn my head….. and think a little…..I smile…. I take a new fresh piece of paper and try again to fill the shadow of his light. Today, I have made my cocoon lamp and hope he forgives me, as I have named it Zeppelin.
