Latvian interior designer Anna Butele of design studio Annvil has recently imbued the spirit of Salvador Dali into a new cafe, located in the capital city of Riga. Inspired by the unique expression for shapes and symbols associated with the artist, the eatery’s interior is a surreal delight. This project includes one of the key features of surrealism – the ability to combine known objects within an extraordinary setting. In the cafe, contrast can be found in the rational solutions that the designer has instilled in an intriguing presentation.

The cafe is located in the Spīķeri, the creative quarter of Riga, which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With an industrial aesthetic, this former warehouse district has a distinct artistic, if not eccentric vibe, and the Dali-inspired cafe fits in perfecty. The central focus of the interior is the bar, which resonates with Dali characteristics of curved lines and floating shapes. Walls are textured creating the illusion of shape for the space. Blue and gold tones – which are referenced as Dali’s favourite colours – form a base for the decor, supplemented with sand white and warm tones.
