MAD Architects stretched rows of ribbons into a widespread canopy in Università degli Studi di Milano’s courtyard for Interni’s Open Borders exhibition during Milan Design Week. The exhibit shows it’s full grace on the porch of the Cortile d’Onore courtyard at Università degli Studi di Milano, connecting the historical loggias and garden with a transcending statement. The display forms an organically curved sculpture that billows to capture attention and inspires a synergetic conversation between the past and present.

MAD Architects’ founder Ma Yansong explains: ‘Borders are usually seen as something closed and unapproachable but I think it’s interesting to make borders attractive, dynamic and engaging.’ When viewed from the courtyard, a blurred mirage of warmth shimmers as the wind tousles the strips in a wavy manner. A harmonious transition of colours takes place as the lines go from ripe red to pulp pink, reflecting hued beams of light as one takes shelter underneath.
