G+MAZE by COORDINATION ASIA, Shanghai – China

July 26th, 2016 by retail design blog

With all the usual trappings of a maze, G+MAZE brings in special elements to take the experience to an exciting new level. Comprised of seemingly endless cubicles to navigate, the maze uses three different types of glass to thwart visitors in a surreal way. With 318 panels made up of patterned black mirror glass, mirrors, and transparent glass, the results are dream-like when paired with its haunting LED lights and dark, moody setting. Patterns of bold plus shapes fill the maze as a nod to the name of its home.

From a design point of view, the idea came from a need for an exciting, creative experience catered to a more mature demographic that likes share with their friends. “We wanted to create a playground that still fit the G+PARK world. We didn’t want it to be like other mazes where everything looks the same – the use of glass and mirrors make this a different experience entirely,” says COORDINATION ASIA founder Tilman Thürmer.

Visitors up for a challenge can take part in the Stamp Game for even more fun. Using a game card featuring eight distinct shapes, players try to find each shape – lit up with LED lights – within the maze. An embossing press below each shape allows players to stamp their cards and collect all eight. Those savvy enough to complete their game cards receive a special certificate from the staff as they exit. The task would be easy enough – if it weren’t for the mirrors and transparent glass ready to throw any master navigator off the trail.

The addition of G+MAZE to G+PARK helps to further establish the area not just as a museum campus but also a new kind of lifestyle hub for Shanghai, and we are proud to be working alongside this forward-thinking cultural company on another trailblazing project.
