Founded in 2008 by husband-and-wife team Julian and Trevyn Mcgowan, Cape Town-based Gallery Southern Guild has evolved into a leading platform of South African contemporary design with a rotating program of exhibitions that lay bare both established and promising emerging designers. Currently on view is transformation, a group showcase that explores the grey area where art and design overlap – it’s a distinct focus of the gallery – through commissioned pieces by 15 local designers and artists.

Interestingly, the show also presents experimentation in material and scale that challenges the usual perception of where artwork ends and functional design begins. The participating creatives were asked to produce a piece that invites the audience to ask similar questions. The exhibition includes work by Chuma Maweni, Otto du Plessis, Dokter and Misses, Stanislaw Trzebinski and Madida Fani.
