Inspired by Powerstations. We designed a machine, which sits centrally within the space and provides for all the various different functions required of the café. The previous tenants had divided up the space with fitted furniture blocking the visual connections to the adjacent harbour. Re-establishing this visual connection with the harbour was essential in the new design.

This Machine organises the central circulation space and allows for a coherent controlled flow within the café whilst at the same time framing the view to the harbor beyond. It also defines the different zones within the cafe. The Machine was constructed of steel with reclaimed oak inserts where people come into contact with it.

It pops up to create a bar, down to provide a seat and chimneys rise up to illuminate the space. All the shelving and storage are integrated into the design of this central machine. The Perimeter walls were painted white to highlight the importance of the central Machine.
