AMO’s set design for Miu Miu SS23 made the internet visible in three different ways, while submerging the Palais d’lena in a submarine atmosphere.

Key features
AMO transformed the historical interior of Palais d’Iena with digital works depicting sharks by Chinese artist Shuang Li. The Miu Miu SS23 set was an immersive ‘undersea’ environment with industrial infrastructure. Black rubber flooring and metal cages dominated the space. Underwater cables – the invisible force driving the modern internet – were refashioned into a continuous tubular bench with fluorescent green rings. The rings were made from gaffer tape, used by photographers on show stages to label and secure wiring and indicate marks and position. For the rest of the set, AMO used two types of digital devices: traditional digital displays and transparent ones. A giant see-through screen half-camouflaged the site’s monumental concrete staircase, and the models emerged through Shuang Li’s videos as the digital sharks ended the show by biting the digital internet cables.

The elements used for the set will find new life after the event thanks to La Réserve Des Arts, which offers collection, recovery, and recirculation services for all types of materials from the cultural sector.

FRAME’s take
AMO successfully told a story of contemporary youth by showcasing Li’s work and using traditional stenographic means and digital screens to spatially visualize internet operations. The relatively new technology of see-through screens let the architects achieve the lapse of both worlds, offering the digital image while keeping the physical architecture present. The show thus achieved an innovative layering of architecture, media and performance, transgressing boundaries between reality and its replication. With the SS23 set, Miu Miu continues to promote spatial experimentation, its fashion show helping push the possibilities of phygital design.
