For little over two decades – apart from a recession in 2020 due to the global outbreak of COVID-19 – Indonesia has seen a robust growth of its economy, fuelling not only many local creative industries and initiatives, but also, as a result, the urban retail landscape. Founded in 2009 by creative entrepreneur Hendry Sasmitapura, denim brand Pot Meets Pop has gained a loyal following both home and abroad with its quirky pot culture-inspired streetwear silhouettes. Based in Bandung (pron.: bahn-doong), the country’s third biggest city, Pot Meets Pop has had a store here for quite some time, but as of late, it has upgraded its brick and mortar presence with a brand new flagship store. Situated a only stone’s throw away from its previous store in the Citarum district, the new retail space not only signals Pot Meet Pop‘s drive and ambition, but cleverly, also the underground music and art legacy of its hometown that’s known across Indonesia and beyond.

The interior design, created by local design and architecture practices ark_off and DAS Appétite, has retained as much as possible of the classic shape of the building, but also lend it a distinct contemporary look. Shoppers enter the premises through a sleek, metal-framed glass door adorned with large acrylic logo box overhead, and find themselves in a clean and understated space. The backdrop, captured in deep green, for the larger part by the resin flooring, and also white, optically defines the space, backed up by a simplified configuration. The first thing they encounter indoors is a pop-up display with modular metal hangers, presenting the latest Pot Meet Pop collections and highlighted products. An embedded fun element is a vinyl DJ booth paired with vintage Altec Lansing A7 speakers which is used for bi-weekly in-store Pot Meets Sound sessions to touch base with the brand’s sizeable following. At the back of the store, the Denim Display Room can be found where the brand’s latest denim collection is presented in a setting with an indigo wood stain plywood wall which adds warmth and texture.
