As the cradle of Peruvian-Japanese or Nikkei fare that set the culinary world ablaze, Lima has its fair share of gourmet dinings spots, and the scene here continues to evolve. Nestled in the tony seaside neighbourhood of San Isidro is UKE, a newly opened hand roll bar situated on the perimeter of a shopping centre. Occupying just 37 sqm. (398 sq.ft.), it has its very own street side entrance, and features an interior design by local architecture and design practice ESTUDIOLOCAL. The latticed façade and suspended Noren decorations may hint a traditional design, but when stepping inside, a distinctly contemporary setting with a matching lattice backdrop unfolds which only subtly hints the legacy of the past. A lower ceiling and a small side table create an intimate reception area. UKE‘s inner sanctum sees a robust L-shaped bar takes centre stage, constructed with a concrete base, a front covered in Totora straw mats, and tiered top. The lower table top is a single piece of wood of approx. five metres long, was designed with softened edges, providing guests a comfortable touch when leaning against it.

The volume seats eleven guests who sit on comfy cushioned stools. Each piece of furniture is custom-made for UKE, including the table lamps at the bar, and tweaks were applied while the space was taking shape. Interestingly, the setting and atmosphere is built on a Japanese understanding of the importance of darkness, and is similar to traditional Izakayas in the Land of the Rising Sun. As such, fabric and paper lamps have specifically been selected as they filter the light, creating the right warmth and intimacy for the compact space. The chosen material palette, which, next to the infusion of dark timber, also includes steel and black slate, all add to creating an intimate ambiance. In the bathroom, a neon-red light and steel faucets offer an unexpected, almost cinematic gesture. As said, UKE is a hand roll restaurant, and the menu lists a freshly made, large variety with different fish toppings, in addition to a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. © superfuture
