Lai Yuen is a Hong Kong brand with unique features and style. From an amusement park to a restaurant, from Mei Foo to Tsim Sha Tsui, Lai Yuen has always been the hallmark of a generation. When we were invited to collaborate with Lai Yuen Restaurant, my team and I had to come up with an interior design that can accommodate the developmental needs and prospect of the brand. After a lot of discussions, we all agreed on a modest design that exhibits the park’s motto – “simple happiness”.
Light colours and oak materials are used to form the basic tone, creating a bright and homely impression. On the ceiling there are a white wooden carousel and an arched wooden chandelier, preserving elements of the park. Moreover, to provide support and opportunity for local artists, Lai Yuen invited four local illustrators to collaborate in the project, including Lam Pei, Miloza, Kila Cheung and Dirty Paper. They created artwork in their own distinct styles with Lai Yuen attractions and food in the old days as themes. We believe that the entire project not only can revive memories for Lai Yuen’s loyal fans, but can also attract young people to come and create “Lai Yuen memories” of their own generation.
