After 24 years ISSEY MIYAKE closed its store in Tribeca last December, but the forward Japanese fashion brand will soon return. In fact, it’ll officially open up shop on Fri – May 8, but now across town in New York City‘s Nomad area. Here, the company has secured no less than 1,200 sqm. (12,917 sq.ft.) spread across two floors of the New York Life Building, a landmark 1920s high-rise building by architect Cass Gilbert (1859-1934). ISSEY MIYAKE tapped Solid Objectives, an acclaimed architecture practice based in Amsterdam and New York City, to create a fitting interior design. The ground floor sees an understated, largely uncluttered design which celebrates both its grand voluminosity and the building’s architecture. The presence of the structure’s original metal beams are visually challenged by a newly installed glass staircase in the middle of the store.

A palette of aluminium and stainless steel materials are used in the interior, in addition to titanium panels by architect Frank Gehry, while display shelves are made from glass reused from the former Tribeca store. The new ISSEY MIYAKE flagship store obviously carries a wide range of its lines and product ranges, including ISSEY MIYAKE, iM Men, 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, me ISSEY MIYAKE, HaaT, GOOD GOODS ISSEY MIYAKE, ISSEY MIYAKE Parfums, ISSEY MIYAKE Watch, ISSEY MIYAKE Eyes, ISSEY MIYAKE foot. But that’s not all. The retail space is also home to MADO, the brand’s first gallery space outside Japan, presenting a rotating programme of exhibitions, collaborations, and special projects. © superfuture
