With its soaring height and stunning pixellated façade, the King Power MahaNakhon – formerly simply known as MahaNakhon – it’s easy to see why the building has become the ultimate landmark of modern Bangkok since it opened in 2016. But as of late, the Ole Scheeren-designed skyscraper gained even more allure with the opening of The Standard, arguably the most hotly anticipated five-star lodgings in the Thai capital in years, on the premises. Following the opening of The Standard Hua Hin last December, this is luxury hotel chain’s second outpost, and similar to the seaside resort, it’s a lifestyle hotel that ticks all of our boxes. The design of The Standard‘s 155 rooms and public spaces is a collaborative effort by acclaimed Spanish designer Jaime Hayón in collaboration with the hotel chain’s in-house design team.

The double-height lobby sets the tone, featuring an emerald green space filled with large handmade rattan lamps, hand-picked furnishings and objects, and last but not least, flooring with an artistic depiction of a couple in a tender embrace. The rooms come in no less than six different categories and sizes, each one offering not only the comfort and amenities of today’s savvy traveller, but also a contemporary, playful setting in vibrant colours and fluid shapes. Here for self-pampering? Well, why not book the 144 sqm. (1,550 sq.ft.) Bigger Penthouse? As its name already implies, it’s The Standard‘s largest room, and it comes with a wide range of lavish extras, such as a a dining area that seats up to eight people and a living room with a full sitting area and a connecting powder room.

The master bedroom has a king size bed, a roomy wardrobe, work desk, dressing table, and a well-appointed en suite bathroom with a giant soaking tub and rain shower. Oh, and the views are simply amazing. Needless to say, The Standard hotel has shaken up the upper echelon of Bangkok‘s hospitality scene, and that has also got a lot to do with its dynamic dynamic array of restaurant, lounge, bar and nightlife offerings. The property features the first international outpost of the renowned The Standard Grill, the hotel chain’s New York City-inspired take on a classic brasserie that blends traditional American steakhouse with a freshness of regional flavours. It’s an all-day dining spot for fresh breakfast delights, lunchtime favourites, and lavish dinners. Another culinary trump card is Mott 32, a leading Chinese restaurant chain from Hong Kong which serves Cantonese dishes with some Beijing and Sichuan influences.

Ojo is a buzzing rooftop restaurant with a retro-glam setting where chef Francisco Paco Ruano demonstrates creative twists on authentic Mexican cuisine and cocktails. You’ll dance all night and pause for sweeping views from the 76th floor. And just when you thought you couldn’t go any higher, there’s Sky Beach, the city’s supremely reigning sky bar. It’s an outdoor playground for movers and shakers, serving American-style bites, a creative cocktail selection from one of Bangkok’s most celebrated mixologists, and last but not least, a rotation of live DJ sets. The Parlour, at the heart of the hotel, offers a homey refuge where to socialise, relax, hear a lecture or live music, and catch up with friends for drinks. During the day, hunker down at a table among the greenery to get some work done, or sit back with your morning newspaper and coffee.

In the evenings, the airy space hosts author talks, cocktail parties, lectures by local tastemakers, and live DJ sets directly from the in-house Sounds Studio. Tease is a tea room with a fashionable contemporary twist, offering an expansive and expertly curated selection of, yes indeed, teas, in addition to American desserts and sweet and savory bites. Let’s not forget to mention the gorgeous, movie set-worthy pool, tucked away in a lush and serene poolscape overlooking the city, and it comes with its own menu of light dishes, craft cocktails, small bites for sharing, and plenty of plant-based delights, juices and smoothies. Balancing all that good life is easy with The Standard Gym, a 24-hour venue equipped with state-of-the art equipment, offering CLMBR, Peloton and TechnoGym machines, along with an open studio, personal training by professionals, and more. Situated in the lobby, The Standard Shop curates and designs custom pieces for both guests and fans.
