Offering breathtaking views of the eastern metropolis centred around Tokyo Skytree, Sushi SORA, located on the 38th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo in Nihonbashi-Muromachi, the heart of Tokyo, has debuted as a new and intimate setting for enjoying authentic, “Edo-mae” -style traditional sushi cuisine.
Conjuring up a unique floating sensation, SORA’s entrance partition of crisscrossed arched steel rods reminds one of the “blurred” or “misty” look found in ink wash paintings. Looking through, the jet-black materials used in the interior create an ascetically suppressed space. Installed at a precisely calculated angle, an exquisitely crafted dining counter made from Japanese cypress more than 350 years old allows guests to enjoy the fabulous cityscape view spreading out below while also witnessing the skill and craftsmanship of the sushi chef. Reflecting soft, indirect lighting, a water-filled interior accent piece of Ryukyu blown-glass at the end of the counter provides an elegant finishing touch.
Though just 53sqm, this minimally-sized space conveys Japanese culture and ideology to the fullest. Going beyond theory, the design was subject to a daunting verification process so that everything from materials and measurements to lighting would meet the exacting service standards and philosophy of the Mandarin Oriental. The result is a uniquely shining presence aesthetically in concert with Tokyo’s cityscape.
