Anyone even slightly familiar with japan’s pop culture knows Yoon and Verbal are downright royalty. Flaunting an eclectic style that straddles hiphop, street style and high fashion, the husband and wife team have firmly anchored themselves in Tokyo’s fashion and music scene with their jewellery brand Ambush, and aren’t doing badly abroad as well. Blessed with a background that’s permeated with multicultural influences – both have Korean roots and spent a considerable time stateside – asian sensibilities and clear-cut visual codes are paired with a media-savvy approach, putting both the brand and its founders at the forefront of style.
Since its inception in 2008, Ambush has gone from strength to strength, appealing to fashion forward circles across the planet. The jewellery brand is now expanding operations with the highly anticipated launch of Ambush workshop, its very first store just off boutique-lined cat street in Tokyo’s buzzing Shibuya shopping district. Aiming to make a unique retail statement, Yoon and Verbal enlisted acclaimed architecture practice Wonderwall to create an interior design that reflects the brand’s quirky design vision. A striking white panel shields off the lower façade, but features a diagonal cut-out at the bottom to gain access to the premises. A narrow staircase leads up to the second floor where an interior unfolds that’s marked by a play of clean lines and smooth surfaces.
A row of support pillars runs along an elongated jewellery cabinet, making it seem to defy gravity. It’s lit by a sleek light fixture that dangles from the ceiling across the same length. Additional furnishings comprise of two display units and clothing racks that showcase apparel items. A ceiling of exposed timber and heavy steel beams offers a stark visual contrast with the understated aesthetic below. Ambush workshop carries the full range of jewellery, in addition to a curated selection of apparel pieces and an exclusive range of store exclusives, including limited edition t-shirts, bags and original accessories. Location: 1-22-8 Shibuya.
